After all, these patterns cost me my academic career! I certainly know well what it’s like when you feel that you’re underachieving at work. Even when I performed well, I was still critical of my achievements. I lost sleep over work; my nervous system was always on; I found it difficult to concentrate and stick with one task at a time. This inner and outer pressure left me feeling not good enough. I took on more and more tasks to prove that I was worthy. In the end, I felt burnt out and utterly unmotivated.
Healing my nervous system was the game-changer. I can actually take time off work now and not go cold turkey. I feel way more productive, because I’m not working all the time. It’s much easier to unwind and have a deep rest that my body and psyche needs.

What does it take to heal your agitation and restlessness?
Step 1. Feeling safe
Until you feel safe, it’s hard to let go of the old hurts that keep your system agitated. Being in a safe held environment with like-minded people can help your nervous system unwind and calm down, even if it’s just for a few hours online.
Step 2. Deep rest
Dealing with what really keeps you up at night can allow you to rest deeply. Often times, those anxious thoughts and inability to wind down are symptoms of past trauma. Healing the underlying causes of your restlessness can allow deep rest.
Step 3. Digest your experiences
Often your undigested experiences from the past can create hyper-sensitivity and sensory overload. By acknowledging and releasing past hurts, you’d be able to improve on your physical digestive system and your ability to process your feelings.
Step 4. Have fun
It’s hard to allow yourself to have fun when you’re in survival mode. Your inability to lower your guard can run you into the ground. Life can get very busy, and the body buzzes within. When you heal the underlying causes, joy will bubble up.
