What Emotional Eating is Really About

For me, emotional eating is about a lack of love. Underneath layers of fat, self-flagellation and self-hatred, there’s a gaping hole, a void that no amount of food can fill up. So you eat and eat and eat and still feel empty.  

You try to numb down that pain with food, because in my experience, emotional eating boils down to one core wounding: feeling unloveable.  

The child in you still feels bewildered: why couldn’t they love me? What’s wrong with me? You start feeling out of control because your strategies to get attention don’t seem to get you the love that you’re craving.  

Food becomes one thing that you can control. Whether consuming too much or abstaining from it, it’s a method of control in the circumstances where you had no say. Perhaps you had to live through your parents’ divorce, bullying at school or some sexual violation. Focusing on food had made life manageable somehow.  

These patterns exist for a good reason. Getting rid of the symptoms by dieting or exercise doesn’t make the pain go away.  

Until you heal the cause of the problem, you’ll continue to self-destruct through your food consumption or any other addictions.
