Why New Year Resolutions Often Don’t Work(and what you can do differently)
For many years, my new year goals felt like a wishful thinking. Yes, I wanted this, that and the other, but as many people, by mid-January I normally fell off the wagon.
Why?
Because a part of me wanted *that thing* (for example, expand my business) and another part cancelled it out because it deemed it dangerous (it would mean greater visibility, risk of feeling judged and not being in control of how people react to my content).
It was only once I addressed this inner split and fear of growth, I was finally able to move forward with my business.
In my experience, this is why new year resolutions don’t work:
Consciously, you may be fully onboard with your new year resolutions. You might have even made plans which sound logical and worthwhile.
Here’s the problem though: your conscious mind is responsible for 5-10% of your mental activity. It’s in charge of your rational thinking, decision-making and logical reasoning.
In contrast, your subconscious mind is responsible for 95% of your actions, emotions, processes and thoughts. Your subconscious mind stores every piece of information you obtain and can present you with solutions to any problems.
Now, if a part of you thinks that your new year resolution could push you out of your comfort zone and can cause you to re-experience some past hurt (abandonment, criticism, judgment, rejection or punishment), your subconscious mind will resolve that problem by stopping you from taking any action. This is when you start procrastinating, sabotaging yourself and holding back. You find every excuse under the sun to not take action towards what you have resolved to do: new diet plan, exercise regime, creating that course, writing that book….
Until you put that old pain to rest, your subconscious mind won’t let you grow and expand.
