Who Am I?

Have you ever asked yourself: Who Am I?

It’s a simple question that doesn’t have an easy answer. In some ways, it’s easier to say who you are not. Often it’s a starting point for a deeper exploration.

I see three issues that get in the way of knowing yourself deeply:

1.      Not being mirrored by your mother

Up until age 2, you don’t feel separate from your mother energetically. As your ‘I’ starts forming in life, your mother is your primary mirror. If you feel seen and heard by your mum, you can form a healthy sense of yourself. If you felt constantly shushed, ignored, neglected, your sense of your ‘self’ starts gradually eroding. If she can’t see you, it’s hard to do it for yourself.

2.      Split and fragmentation.

This often happens in times when you experience some sort of trauma (trauma does not need to be traumatic, by the way). Say, your parents have separated. If the separation is not well-handled, it’s bound to create a split in you, because you may not know whose side to take.

If you can’t process your feelings and have to push them down, it can gradually create fragmentation in you. The effect of this fragmentation is that there are parts of you that can be shown to the world and parts which are deeply hidden, rejected and orphaned (by you and others). It’s like somehow you don’t feel whole, because those parts want to come home to you.

3.      Overidentification with the roles you play in life.

We all have roles: daughter, mother, sister, your job title, etc. etc. etc.

Those roles do not define you.

They all can change, but somehow, they shape you into a version of you that you present to the world.

Who you are is so much more that those roles. Sometimes, you can twist yourself out of shape to fit in with other people’s ideas and expectations of who you should be to the point that you forget your own true essence.

You are a mystery.

To experience it for yourself, you need to let go of beliefs and identifications that you have picked up along the way.

I’m running a 3-hour masterclass ‘Who Am I?’ on 6 September to help you release some of the old stories and beliefs that keep you stuck so that you can become more of who you’re meant to be. Here’s the link: www.gularavincent.co.uk/i-am

And if you sign up within 24 hours, you’ll get a bonus 30-day From Scarcity Mentality to Safety Mindset programme. Starting on 19 July, you’ll receive daily 15-20 minute guided healing to let go of all the blocks around time, money, love and energy, so that you can open to abundance in all areas of your life. Here’s the link with the programme details: www.gularavincent.co.uk/safety-mindset

I’m going to leave you with a poem by Erin Hanson, which captures the complexity of our identity. I hope that it inspires you to explore this fundamental question.

Not

You are not your age, nor the size of clothes you wear,

You are not a weight, or the color of your hair.

You are not your name, or the dimples in your cheeks.

You are all the books you read, and all the words you speak.

You are your croaky morning voice, and the smiles you try to hide.

You’re the sweetness in your laughter, and every tear you’ve cried.

You’re the songs you sing so loudly when you know you’re all alone.

You’re the places that you’ve been to, and the one that you call home.

You’re the things that you believe in, and the people whom you love.

You’re the photos in your bedroom, and the future you dream of.

You’re made of so much beauty, but it seems that you forgot

When you decided that you were defined by all the things you’re not.

If you’re ready to find out who you truly are, stop feeling so conflicted and torn, join my live masterclass here: www.gularavincent.co.uk/i-am
